Adaku

Almost ten years into her marriage, Adaku is convinced it is no longer the blissful union she has wished for, with her husband, Chukwuma, now preferring to settle every misunderstanding with his fists. Concern about herself and her children drives Adaku in search of a way to save her marriage and restore peace to her home. It is then she gets linked to a non-governmental organization that assists women in her situation. Luckily, a law has been passed criminalizing domestic abuse and they convince Adaku that persecuting her husband is the only way to abate her situation. Little does she realize that things are not as simple as they appear. While the legal fireworks rage, Adaku finds herself taking on, not just her husband, but a society that is yet unprepared to tackle the problem of domestic abuse. As victory in the court dangles so tantalizingly close, Adaku realizes to her dismay that victory and defeat are now one and the same. She comes to the painful conclusion that the peace and happiness she seeks no longer depends on her winning the case, but on what Chukwuma chooses to do. Set in Eastern Nigeria in 2002, this novel takes an in-depth look at the problem of domestic abuse from the besieged home of an ordinary Nigerian woman.
